Job Summary:
This position plays a key part in ensuring our high-voltage vacuum circuit breakers meet customer requirements and industry standards. This position will review customer specifications for compliance, identify and document exceptions or deviations, and propose product configurations to achieve compliance while optimizing performance. This role also requires strong knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, with a focus on high-voltage circuit breaker applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze customer technical specifications, RFQs, and bid documents to assess compliance with Meiden's 38 kV to 145 kV dead tank vacuum circuit breakers.
- Determine compliance against IEEE C37.04, IEEE C37.09, and other relevant industry standards (e.g., ANSI/IEEE, IEC where applicable).
- Identify non-compliances, take clear exceptions, and provide technical clarifications or alternative solutions.
- Collaborate with customers, sales, and internal teams to recommend optimal product configurations, options, and modifications to meet project requirements.
- Review, approve, and/or mark-up elementary schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings for accuracy and compliance.
- Support technical discussions during the sales and bidding process, including clarification meetings with utilities and end-users.
- Interface regularly with sales, engineering, testing, and production teams to resolve technical issues and ensure smooth project execution.
- Contribute to the development of new VCB products by participating in design reviews, generating detailed test plans, and supporting type/design verification testing - including preparation for and coordination with third-party independent laboratories such as CESI/KEMA Labs for certification and compliance validation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of compliance processes, configuration tools, documentation standards, and testing methodologies.
- Stay current with evolving IEEE standards, utility specifications, industry trends in high-voltage switchgear, and advancements in third-party testing requirements.
Position Requirements (knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform satisfactorily in the position):
- PE license (Professional Engineer) or eligibility to obtain.
- 5+ years of professional experience as an electrical engineer in the power systems or switchgear industry.
- Solid understanding of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substation equipment and high-voltage applications.
- Experience interpreting technical specifications, identifying compliance issues, and preparing exception lists or deviation requests.
- Proficiency in reading and reviewing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills for interfacing with customers and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a collaborative environment.
Highly Preferred:
- Direct experience with vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs), especially in the 38 kV to 145 kV range.
- Previous experience in type testing, design verification testing, factory acceptance testing, or coordination with third-party labs (e.g., CESI/KEMA Labs) for high-voltage switchgear certification.
- Utility or end-user experience (e.g., working for or with electric utilities on substation projects).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical for schematic review, diagram modifications, or basic drafting.
Physical Demands:
- Standing under 1/3 of time.
- Walking 1/3 of time.
- Sitting 1/2 of time.
- Talking 2/3 of time.
- Keyboarding 2/3 of time.
- Close, distance, and color vision under 2/3 of time.
- Reading and interpreting instructions over 2/3 of time.
- English and grammar usage skills over 1/2 of time.
- Repetitive motion under 2/3 of time.
